எங்களுக்கு தக்ஷிண பாரத ஹிந்தி பிரசார சபை ஒரு கல்வி நிறுவனம் மட்டுமல்ல;

Waves of Memory
Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha — Chennai and Trichy
S. Anandakrishnan, Chennai, Tamil Nadu
Lover of Hindi — Hindi Pracharak — Retired Headmaster
In the quiet moments of old age, when I look back upon my life, many people, institutions, teachers, friends and well-wishers who guided me along the way arise in my memory like waves.
Among them, one institution stands foremost in my life:
The Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha.
For me, the Sabha was not merely an institution.
It was a ladder of progress, a source of livelihood, and a guide throughout my life.
1967 — The Beginning of My Hindi Journey
The year was 1967. I was seventeen years old.
It was a period when strong anti-Hindi agitations were taking place in Tamil Nadu. At that time, my mother, S. Gomathi, had already been engaged in Hindi propagation in Palani since 1950.
In 1967, the person who came on behalf of the Sabha to examine our class was Sri E. Thangappan, the organiser of the Madurai Sabha.
Later, I came into contact with several distinguished personalities, including Mrs. K. Meenakshi, Sri D.P. Veeraraghavan, Sri Samathindran — poet and scholar, and Sri V.S. Radhakrishnan.
Their guidance and encouragement became important milestones in my Hindi journey.
The Pracharak Training College
I can never forget my days at the Madurai Pracharak Training College.
My professors and guides included:
Sri E. Thangappan
Sri K.N. Ramachandrasha
At that time, I was also introduced to Sri M. Subramaniam, who was serving as Secretary of the Sabha, and to Mrs. K. Meenakshi. Their encouragement gave me great strength.
Later, I had the opportunity to serve at the Pondicherry branch of the Sabha. There, Sri K. Narasimman, the organiser, and several other dedicated persons encouraged the Pracharaks and strengthened their confidence.
Even when the foundation of the Sabha faced difficult times, such people stood like strong pillars and supported the institution.
With their encouragement, blessings and the grace of God, those of us who completed Pracharak training were able to make Hindi our profession and livelihood.
Today, in my old age and after retirement, I remember those days with profound gratitude.
The Sabha — Our Ladder of Livelihood
Among those who received Hindi teacher training along with me was M.R. Ramamurthy, who later served as the General Secretary of the Chennai Sabha. J.S. Ramadas also served as General Secretary.
Many of our fellow trainees went on to serve as postgraduate teachers in government-aided schools in Chennai and eventually retired with honour.
Among them were:
S. Anandakrishnan — Headmaster, The Hindu Higher Secondary School, Triplicane.
Dr. M.S. Jayaram — Santhome Higher Secondary School.
T.V. Krishnamurthy — Santhome Higher Secondary School.
Many others also made Hindi their profession and source of livelihood.
N.S. Mohanram of Madras Christian School and
D.C. Chandrasekar of Wesley Higher Secondary School
remain among the people associated with these cherished memories.
For all of us, the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha was not merely an educational institution.
It was:
A ladder of progress.
A path to livelihood.
A guide for life.
Memories of Friends
My Hindi friends in Chennai included:
S. Veeraraghavan, S. Parthasarathy, Y. Ravi, K. Murali Manohar, S. Sathyanarayanan, Dr. Govindarajan, and Sri Ramasamy — retired Headmaster.
In Pondicherry:
G. Meenakshi Sundaram, J.S. Krishnamurthy, and Ramaswamy.
All of them remain unforgettable parts of my life's journey.
1986 — The Sabha's B.Ed. College
The year 1986 also remains special in my memory, as it was the period when the Sabha's B.Ed. College was started.
Sri Krishnamurthy served as the Principal.
During that first year, Y. Ravi, Ramasamy and I — Anandakrishnan served as part-time professors.
The person who made this opportunity possible was Dr. M. Loganatham, who was then the General Secretary of the Sabha.
The fact that our names remain associated with the early teaching faculty of the Sabha's B.Ed. College is a matter of great pride and happiness for me.
Those Who Brought Me to Chennai
One of the important persons who became instrumental in bringing me to Chennai was Sri Satyagraha Acharya, the Manager of the Sabha.
My maternal uncle and father-in-law, K.V. Sankaranarayanan, served as a Deputy Police Officer in Chennai. His support was also important in my life.
I was also fortunate to have the association and guidance of distinguished Hindi scholars such as Dr. Venkata Krishnan, P.K. Balasubramaniam, Dr. Sundaram, Dr. Seshan and Madhudavan.
Their influence left unforgettable impressions on my life.
Memories of Wesley Higher Secondary School
Professor E. Balasubramaniam, who served as a Hindi teacher at Wesley Higher Secondary School, later informed me by letter that he was resigning from Wesley School to join the Sanskrit College in Chennai as a professor.
Another Hindi teacher who worked with him, O.R. Rajagopalan, loved me like his own brother.
His elder brother, Dr. Venkata Krishnan, was also a professor of Hindi.
These personal relationships are among the precious memories that I continue to cherish.
My Mother — My First Hindi Teacher
The true foundation of my Hindi journey was my mother, S. Gomathi.
From 1950 until 2000, right up to her final days, she was engaged in Hindi propagation in Palani.
For her, Hindi was not merely a subject.
Hindi was her life.
Hindi was her service.
Hindi was her very breath.
She was also the founder of the Palani Balamurugan English School.
My mother planted the first seed of Hindi in my life. That seed grew, and through the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, it became a large and meaningful tree.
Mahatma Gandhi — The Guiding Spirit Behind the Sabha
At the foundation of my Hindi journey stands Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
Inspired by his far-sighted vision of developing Hindi as a language of communication among the people of India, the Sabha has transformed the lives of countless people in Tamil Nadu and throughout South India.
In the month of October, the birth month of Gandhiji and the month in which World Teachers' Day is observed, I offer my humble pranam to him.
I remember the immortal words of Thiruvalluvar:
“There is no salvation for those who forget the good done to them.”
Remembering those who helped me is not merely an act of gratitude; it is my duty.
Those Who Encouraged My Literary Journey
My interest in writing was encouraged by Sri Krishnamurthy, proprietor of Jai Publications.
Dr. Rajalakshmi Krishnan encouraged me to receive the Souhardh Samman from Hindi Sahitya Sansthan, Lucknow.
Sri Annamalai, publisher of Om Sakthi, Salem, was introduced to me by Sri Rajavelu, the examination officer of the Sabha.
Every person whom I met on my life's journey has, in one way or another, become a stepping stone in my journey.
Looking Back in Old Age
Today, standing at the threshold of old age, I look back.
How many people!
How many faces!
How many classrooms!
How many journeys!
How many loving teachers!
How many friends!
How many opportunities!
Behind all these memories stands one great institution:
The Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha.
The Sabha was not a ladder only for me.
For many, it was a ladder.
For many, it was education.
For many, it was employment.
For many, it was a livelihood.
For many, it was a guide that transformed their lives.
Without the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, one may well wonder whether the history of Hindi propagation in Tamil Nadu would have grown to such an extent.
Therefore, let us all do whatever we can to strengthen and develop this great institution.
I shall always remember, with deep gratitude, the Sabha that gave me my livelihood and helped shape my life.
The waves of memory continue in old age...
This is not the end.
My waves of memory will continue.
